NSAIDs Review Form

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, celecoxib, mefenamic acid, etoricoxib, and indomethacin. These medications are commonly prescribed for arthritis and pain. They have been over prescribed in the past.

Things you need to know:

  • You should take the lowest possible dose (e.g. Ibuprofen 200mg, Naproxen 250mg, Diclofenac 50mg), for the shortest period and only take on as much as required on the basis of pain
  • Consider a NSAIDs gel rub or paracetamol instead
  • These medications can cause stomach ulcers. If you are taking long term you may need to take a stomach tablet like Omeprazole to protect your stomach
  • If you develop stomach pain or bleeding please call the surgery
  • When you are sick you should stop talking these medications
  • These medications may worsen existing health issues such as heart, liver and kidney problems.
